Jamie is more an antique Roman than a Dane. He is straight and
slender, and more than common tall. He is ill at reckoning, but he
knows a hawk from a handsaw and is advised what he says, neither
disturbed with the effect of wine nor heady-rash, provoked with raging
ire. He is an unfee'd lawyer, but not covetous for gold. He is a foe
to tyrants. He is not gamesome, and does lack some part of that quick
spirit that is in Antony. He loves not wisely but too well. He is a
better scholar than he thought he was, so he'll call for pen and ink
and write his mind.
- 2013-04-27 18:22 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 10 - Coriolanus - link Yes, I'd heard it was less Rossiterean, so hopefully less distracting. It was very noticeable on stage.
- 2013-04-27 15:07 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 10 - Coriolanus - link Sorry I'm late! Yeah, showing your wounds was an actual thing in electoral campaigns. There's a story about one time when a candidate was doing it and had a toga malfunction that he then turned to his advantage by making an inspiring speech along the lin...
- 2012-12-18 23:21 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 9 - As You Like It - link (Also I do think it's a strong possibility that the 'lion attack' story is something Orlando and Oliver cook up between them to impress / worry Rosalind. What with Oliver having until very recently been all eeevil and scheming, and Orlando being plainly t...
- 2012-12-18 23:14 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 9 - As You Like It - link This is one of my favourite Shakespeare comedies (out of the, er, two or three Shakespeare comedies I've actually seen). It's just really playful and winky. Also it was I think probably the first Shakespeare play I ever saw — I was about ten years ...
- 2012-10-21 00:17 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 7 - King John - link I suspect What Everyone Knows About King John has also been reinforced by Ivanhoe, which seems (and I say this on the basis of never having read the book but having seen a TV version many years ago) to exactly reproduce the Robin Hood caricature of ...
- 2012-09-27 23:33 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 6 - Troilus and Cressida - link So it turns out I've seen stage productions of a surprisingly large number of these obscure Shakespeares... Whatever Charles Grey found in the text that made him play Pandarus as Kenneth Williams sounds like what David Bamber found in the one I sa...
- 2012-09-20 14:09 - The Astronauts at the End of Time - link I've just read The rituals of infinity for no better reason than that I seem to have acquired a yellowed second-hand copy in circumstances I no longer remember, and quite enjoyed it. Having then thought, 'Ah, I expect Arthur must have brained the f...

- 2012-09-15 15:16 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 5 - Timon of Athens - link Hope you enjoy (or probably by the time you read this it should say 'enjoyed') the NT production! Timon is another one I saw when I was quite young and I really didn't know what to make of it except that I didn't really like the guy or feel...
- 2012-08-07 20:21 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 2 - Cymbeline - link Oh and also can I just join in the love for that BBC radio Lord of the rings. The music is so good too! The only version where I don't wish they'd cut out Tolkien's random pointless songs.
- 2012-08-07 20:04 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 2 - Cymbeline - link I have actually seen Cymbeline on stage! I think it was the RSC at the Barbican. Quite some years ago: I was probably in my mid-teens and it was sort of tangentially relevant to my historical interests (Roman Britain and all that). I also remembe...

I don't know when (or whether) Rowling joined the Church of Scotland, but it's possible for her to have done so without living in Scotland. There is, for example, a Church of Scotland church near where I work...
- 2012-07-07 19:47 - Ferretbrain Presents: The Complete Works of Shakespeare Episode 0 - Introduction - link I was tickled by the idea of putting the plays in chronological order of their contents so I thought I'd try it. Here's my attempt: A midsummer night's dream (before the Trojan war!) Troilus and Cressida (possibly some time betw...
