Playpen

Welcome to the Playpen, our space for ferrety banter and whimsical snippets of things that aren't quite long enough for articles (although they might be) but that caught your eye anyway.

I LOVED the finale. Love, love, loved it. It's so nice not to be drowned in drowed in angst syrup, for a change.

Oh, and another thing:
thank FUCK Rory got promoted to full companion, and thank FUCK a big stake has been driven through the heart of RTD's repetitive unrequited love plot point.

Dr Who finale: not what I was expecting, several orders of magnitude more awesome.

I'm so glad Moffat felt able to reinvent the series, just like RTD invented it - I'm sure there are some fans of the earlier seasons who aren't happy but for me it's gone from a series which I would occasionally watch and be disappointed with when RTD was at the helm to something I am a drooling fanboy of. I'm sure Moffat will eventually get stale like RTD did and the next guy might take the show in a direction I like more or intensely dislike but I'm OK with that - I'd much prefer a Who which reflects the particular style of the head honcho of the time at the price of the occasional season being not to my tastes than something which tries to appeal to so many factions of the audience at once it becomes utterly bland.

Also:
not only is Moffat willing to give hints to the season's metaplot that are actually bona fide hints rather than just pointless namedropping, but he's actually made it clear he's planning things at least a season or two in advance. I love that.

Captured! By Robots, a band consisting of one human beings and the robot overlords he built. He's a pretty good frontman but the robots can rock out perfectly well without him.

Woffles! I was playing that this morning - it's insanely chaotic.

I've also recently been enjoying Doodle God.

Well, here's something you can play without worrying about compatibility with windows... Transformice!

Well, I have a VM instance that I keep around, but I use that mostly for work stuff so don't want to fill it up with games :S

I have similar problems under WINE - it seems to vertically displace the display within its window in a way that only lets you see the very bottom of the screen... I guess for some things you just need to keep an old windows machine around. :P

Hangs for me just after I enter my profile name -- audio nitpicks, I think. Like lots of WINE software.

Will it not work under WINE?

Just saw an advert for Robot Unicorn Attack on TV! It features the line "Is your masculinity challenged? Then you're not man enough to play this game!" -- love it!

It's sadly devoid of sparkly robot unicorns but I have a raging addiction to Desktop Dungeons.

Ooh, that's been one of my recent favourites too, although I haven't played the newest version. Took me absolutely forever to beat the Factory...

But the setting is so delightfully exotic and foreign and magical, how can you have any problems with it?

Dear God, what is wrong with the Smart Bitches?!! Did they read the same book as me?! "It’s also about a terribly smart, horrifically brilliant woman, who is both the predator and the victim." This is the wankfantasy with the childlike breasts?! PLEASE.

@Andy:
The standoff I'll give you. The Daleks not destroying the Earth makes sense because they're planning on coming back in the 1960s and invading once they've built up their forces (bear in mind that there are only three of them left in the Universe at this point). As you'll know if you played the downloadable game. ;)
