Playpen

Welcome to the Playpen, our space for ferrety banter and whimsical snippets of things that aren't quite long enough for articles (although they might be) but that caught your eye anyway.

Chainsawsuit's latest strip done stole my heart.

We outgrew the old setup, basically :-)

Aw, and here I was thinking you'd found a wasp nest in the old server. (Unusual, sure, but once you chew through the fan cables it's really quite cozy over the winter.)

People are looking at stuff? Why would you do that?

(Said people looking at stuff, it would be cool if you'd post, I guess!)

All these visitors loading up pages and looking at stuff. Who do they think they are?

Out of interest, what prompted the server change?

Altogether now: lol.

Yeah, the prospect of having to deal with blocks of prose like that review (and the book for that matter) is part of the reason I didn't want to chug ahead for a masters. I want to be a writer, but I've always been leery of workshops. It's the inner struggle between the desire to improve your technical skills and the fear that going to one of these things will lock you in a certain mode of thought (and cost a few hundred dollars in the bargain). Most of my contact with contemporary American fiction has come from angry reviews by American expats in alternative newspapers, so it was nice to see that their complaints were on to something.

The main problem I noticed was that it's an article about a book about the difference between "literary scholarship" and "creative writing" by a lit PhD by a lit PhD. It reads like one too. I got a strong aftertaste of prejudice, a whiff of snobbery, and bored by the third wordy, pretentious paragraph (in fairness, part of the pretention is in the quotes). In fairness, I've never been interested in the literary side of fiction and know absolutely nothing about modern American fiction or most of the authors mentioned, so I may well fall outside the target audience...

I didn't know it existed until you posted the trailer, but now I am mad excited about it.

Is anyone else super excited to see Red? I am all kinds of psyched for this movie! Anyone read the comic book it's based on?

WEAK and FLACCID in the grip of SATAN - but GROWING TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL when it is nurtured by Christ. Yeah, that works.

...so that makes the dick humanity. Nice. Reared by Catholicism (ha!), I thought titty fucking could be how Mary maintained her virginity while doing her part to maintain her marriage as well. Win/win!

Hey, speaking of misogynist lyrics, the Guardian has a hilarious Insane Clown Posse interview where they ask how the lyrics of "I Stuck Her With My Wang" advance the Posse's newly-revealed evangelical agenda.

Yeah, basically. With a nice side of "I don't want to deal with your daddy-issues, bitch" and "Boys aren't nearly so fragile as girls are so lets just focus on the chicks shall we?" Must. Smash. John. Mayer. With. Hammer.

Having read over the lyrics, I still don't find those songs as offensive as a certain John Mayer song . Not that he's known for being overly progressive in his views, but every time I hear this song, I want to punch something....
