Welcome to the Playpen, our space for ferrety banter and whimsical snippets of things that aren't quite long enough for articles (although they might be) but that caught your eye anyway.

Wow, I had picked that movie all wrong, too... based on the advertising I had assumed it was furry porn.

I thought I linked to that a few weeks ago...
At any rate, it's given me another reason to find a copy of The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.

Holy shit, I didn't realise the new Yogi Bear film was so grim.

Finally, last post for the night (I hope): here's some new words us genre reviewers can use!

Oh, and it appears I've missed out on another internet fight in the SF/F blogosphere.

I really *really* like ME. It's exactly the same as every other Bioware game but ... y'know ... guns! and aliens! and spaceships! and Seth Green! Although as a confirmed FPSer I suspect you'll find the shooty-aspects risible, like a fifty year old man trying to get down with the kids.

@Kyra: Good stuff! I'm actually planning on finally playing Mass Effect for the first time this weekend, assuming everything else goes according to plan.
And apropos of nothing, it appears that Guillermo Del Toro's adaptation of In The Mountains of Madness is dead in the water.

If anyone happens to be in Melbourne this May, they can see Melina Marchetta and Cassandra Cla(i)re on a panel together.

Omg, DAII is out tomorrow. For some reason I'd convinced myself it was the 22nd of March. SQUEEE!

I found RIAW on City of Bones slightly difficult actually. It was quite funny, but I found their patronizing attitude to the presumed target audience of the book rather difficult to take.

The UK is being excused We Dare as well.
Supposedly this is about the Daily Mail getting pissy about it getting a 12 rating. To be honest, I suspect that's just the excuse they're using because they can't bring themselves to say "Actually, the game is just shit."

Are you kidding? It would be fucking awesome. Who cares if the last book had a bit of the suck? If I wrote something that she wanted to say something about: win. If she got paid to say something of mine she didn't read, and it turned out my story sucked taint: win, because everyone reading my horrible story would come to realize her opinion isn't worth a sac of knuts.

Hmm, I wonder what it'd be like to have a quote from Rowling ... on something I wrote. Ugh.

Mm, that Justine Larbalestier article is very nice. And, as a reviewer who also aspires to have my own writings published one day, it's nice to have some validation from the "in" crowd. (Hmm, I wonder what it'd be like to have a quote from Rowling - or worse, Troy Denning or Karen Traviss - on something I wrote. Ugh.)
That really was very sweet, and it also led me to this series of essays on "Writing Strong Women", which looks fascinating.

Kyra: Also I don't normally read interviews with authors because they tend to come across really badly but every time I read something that has in some way come out of Daniel Abraham's mouth I kind of want to jump around and cuddle him. I totally love the guy.

I'm glad there's been some <ahref = "http://justinelarbalestier.com/blog/2011/03/06/i-love-bad-reviews/">sane backlash against the "be nice" mantra.

"No - there's only so much you can rehabilitate Nixon. The Watergate recordings are so damning – just in terms of racism alone. It's not so much rehabilitation, as saying there are worse things in the world than him."
