Welcome to the Playpen, our space for ferrety banter and whimsical snippets of things that aren't quite long enough for articles (although they might be) but that caught your eye anyway.

@ Shimmin.
What - Alayne, Elaine, Alanna, Alaina, Al'Ana and Olanaa all die? Quickly? As in, less than 1,000 pages? That doesn't sound too bad actually.

@Andy.
A sudden plague of giant wasps happens to them. It's all over very quickly.
Then the planet gets struck by a meteor swarm.

I love the fact that you can push a button and woosh! All the pretty graphics are gone and the original game is still hiding underneath! (It does mean, of course, that the remake is just a glorified skin for the original, but it's such a gorgeous skin I'll probably grab it anyway.)
Also, check out the episodic sequel project. The 3D graphics are ugly but seem necessary for producing episodic games on a regular schedule, and I hear very good things about what they did with Sam and Max.

My name's Kyra and I want to be a pirate! I'm sure everybody else has already noticed this (I was in Vienna!) but Monkey Island Remake ahoy!

@Shimmin: But you missed out the hundred thousand Aes Sedai filler characters whose names all sound the same ... I will never rest easy until I know what happens to them ...

@Andy: ...and Rand woke up, and it was all a dream. He wasn't the Dragon Reborn, just a 24-year-old trainee HR officer living in Newcastle-under-Lyme with his boyfriend Lucas.

How far is too far for Fox News? Apparently, praying for Obama's death is beyond the pale.

3 volumes? By this stage, I just want a bullet-point list of answers to various dangling plot questions that my teenage self was manipulated into caring about against my better judgement. I don't actually want to have to READ any more of the damned things.
I still hold out hope for ASoIaF, though I must say I have adopted a policy of not starting any uncompleted fantasy series.

Given that Martin's been working on his current one for about 9 years (2005's A Feast For Crows is the less interesting half of A Dance of Dragons) and shows no sign of having got anywhere near finishing it, I can't see any reason to imagine he'll have a sudden burst of creativity in the next couple of years. :)

From that post, Sanderson's expecting a final date of fall 2011 -- surely Martin can get another book out in the next two years?

I will be so angry if The Wheel of Time actually gets finished before A Song of Ice and Fire. It will be the last step in George RR Martin becoming a horrible exemplar of everything the first three ASoIaF books are an antidote to.

Yes, Sanderson (who by all accounts is quite good, though I haven't read him myself) is writing the last volume of Wheel of Time, and it's got so big it's going to be split into three sub-volumes.

Viorica, that is the funniest thing I've ever seen.... I've never seen or really paid much attention to Torchwood. Who on earth is the intended audience for this weirdness?

I always feel a tad guilty when authors I've been badmouthing die.

Also this isn't exactly funny except that it is: David Eddings has died - wasn't he meant to be finishing The Wheel of Time, now Robert Jordon is, err, also dead?

Mid-to-late-twenties? Wow, time hasn't been kind to James Marsters at all.

According to Reuters, the goal would be to “make a darker, event-sized movie” with “franchise potential.”
Yet more proof that "darker and edgier" is officially no longer cool: it's become part of marketing speak.
The story would follow a new vampire slayer who must step up to protect the new generation.
WHAT NEW GENERATION THE OLD GENERATION IS STILL IN THEIR MID-TO-LATE-20S

Arthur, I think you've finally proved that horseshoe crabs are indeed an ancient alien civilization.

On an unrelated subject, the lastest Lovelace & Babbage is rather ticklesome.
