Playpen

Welcome to the Playpen, our space for ferrety banter and whimsical snippets of things that aren't quite long enough for articles (although they might be) but that caught your eye anyway.

That does look quite interesting. Have to say, when I read your post I thought, "Why on earth would anyone bother to make an allegory for a problem that ceased to exist in 1994?" But from the trailer I've seen it looks more like treatment of immigrants, which is more worth allegorizing these days.

Has anybody here seen the trailer for the new District 9 movie? It looks like a decent sci-fi flick, except for the heavy-handed "THIS IS AN ALLEGORY FOR APARTHEID" message.

Oh, and it turns out that she got into silly e-mail spats with John McCain's campaign staff. There's an epic Vanity Fair article on the subject too. Endlessly fascinating, and worth knowing about if she's actually going for a 2012 presidential bid.

Sarah Palin resigned as Governor of Alaska and her resignation speech is incredibly incoherent. I don't know what she's up to but it looks entertaining.

Just heard about the collapse of the Darryn Walker prosecution a couple of days ago. Pseudo-Voltaire-style unenthusiastic hurrahs.

A comedian has been elected to the US Senate! It sounds bad but isn't -- he's been a very smart, fairly sensible political commentator for years now, and this Senate race has been dragging on under appeals and such for months.

I did notice that he's more active in the summer months, if you check his blog. Real crazies don't let little things like jobs or degree courses get in the way of their obsessions.

Ah, looks like a shot at viral marketing to me - either he's planning an article/book about it, or it's gonna be a film. All that plugging for people to forward or link it.

If you've played Passage and are interested in the creator at all, you can see him here chatting in this teaser trailer for an upcoming documentary that has him and perennial cranky-old-game-designer Chris Crawford in it. You don't get much but he seems like a very nice young man. :)

Man sees girl in dreams, tries to find her in real life. His YouTube account is the most tragic thing I've seen. Please, Adam, stop doing this to yourself. (Unless this is a joke, in which case great job and I hope someone gives you your own show...)

I thought of you guys the other day when I saw a review card on one of Cassandra Claire's books in Borders. As closely as I can remember, it contained the phrase, "this book is comparable to Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, and that's saying something!"

Yes indeed.

Michael Jackson has died, something I didn't think was possible, considering his less-than-human appearance. RIP King of Pop.
