Playpen

Welcome to the Playpen, our space for ferrety banter and whimsical snippets of things that aren't quite long enough for articles (although they might be) but that caught your eye anyway.

I actually just drooled over the pictures of the books... sigh...

Yes, the other reveal was definitely my favourite bit. I think the way that character was introduced and developed shows more about the moral issues than the interviews did. That said, I did snigger at the interviewee who's since been nicknamed Joe the Closeted Plumber.

This was the episode Fox let Joss do his thing more and I think it shows (not that I'm excusing him for any issues, I just mean that it's maybe not surprising that this has been the best episode so far).

I quite liked the interviews as a more explicit suggestion of Dollhouse's intent, although I agree, they came across smug and heavy handed. Although I'm not too impressed at another sexual abuse storyline, I think that the moral issues surrounding that, as well as the other reveal, were much more interesting.

I know the snippets of commentary from the general public was supposed to parallel and engage with the debate surrounding the show itself - and I felt a finger was being wagged at me

Oh dear, should I ask?

Open note to TV producers: Promoting debate by BEING SHIT does not excuse BEING SHIT.

Thanks my new friend, I've finally caught up with Dollhouse - God, I feel so ambivlant about it, I hardly know what to think from one minute to the other. One thing is for certain, Joss Whedon makes extremely watchable TV.

'The Man on the Street' was a generally interesting episode (I liked the way things *happened* in it) but I hated the intersections from the documentary. I know the snippets of commentary from the general public was supposed to parallel and engage with the debate surrounding the show itself - and I felt a finger was being wagged at me. That kind of engagement is so damn smug.

I just found something: FuzzMail records not just the final text of the email you write, but also what you wrote during the process of composition, and lets your recipient view it online! It brings pauses and "um" and "like" to the electronically written word - isn't that pretty cool?

Oooh, you're right! Sidereel is my friend after all!

Hello Sidereel, let's get coffee!

A couple of the streaming sites Sidereel links to can be accessed from the UK -- at least, they can from my work...

Alas! No - Sidereel is not my friend because Sidereel is xenophobic. It is only the friend of Americans.

(alas my internet-fu is failing me - I can't find Dollhouse at the moment and I am intrigued to see this display of "goodness" you claim for it =P)

In geekier news, Part 2 of Bastard of the Old Republic is up - an article I'm quite enjoying. It's also throwing my current playthrough of Mass Effect in sharp relief.

A lot of setup for future plotlines, a revelation that actually raises complicated moral issues, and potential character development. Oh, and more sexual abuse, but I'm just going to ignore that part.

Wow, last night's Dollhouse was actually good. I'm in shock.

Hmm, I shouldn't post here in the middle of translating contracts, as apparently it makes me use words like aforementioned.

Though there is also an I, Claudius film in the making. Which sounds an awful idea given the existence of the aforementioned BBC version.

Noooooo ... they can't jump into the I Claudius years; those were already comprehensively BBC-ed years ago and can never be surpassed.

Oh! And Cleopatra's dead, of course. And whatever happened to Calpurnia and Pompey's wife and kids? Not to mention his son.

Uh, let's see. Servilia was dead, Antony was dead, Brutus was dead, as were Cicero, Eirene, and Gaia. Vorenus is "dead", but I believe Bruno Heller confirmed somewhere that he's still alive. We've also still got Pullo, Atia,, Octavian, Octavia, Ceasarion, the Vorenii (including Lyde), Agrippa, Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene, Livia, and Octavia's daughter. I can see some interesting drama coming out of that mix. And they could always jump ahead to the I, Claudius years, though I'm not sure if Pullo and Vorenus would still be alive that far down the road.

The difference from Serenity was that the planned future seasons were bundled into the film, whereas in Rome they were already bundled into the second half of season 2. There's not a huge deal of story left until I, Claudius times years down the line.

And didn't everyone die?

I misread that as being "mystery condition leaves hedgehogs without spines" as in "leave hedgehogs without spinal cords".

Which would have been some *freaky fucking shit*

So, is the film going to be a sequel to the series (like Serenity) or an adaptation of it?
